ECEA 100- Growth and Development for Young Children
Course Overview

This program offers an overview of the historical and theoretical aspects of development across the lifespan, concentrating on physical, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional growth. Students will examine key theories and approaches to lifespan development, analyze genetic and environmental influences on individual growth, and investigate signs of developmental delays and related risks. Additionally, they will explore classroom strategies to address the unique needs of students.
English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements
Applicants must provide one of the following:
- Proof of completing 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) in English in a country where English is a primary language.
- Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is a
principal language.
IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5
- TOEFL IBT: Overall score of 46.
- CLB PT: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.
- CELPIP: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.
CAEL Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: Overall score of 40
Admission Requirements
- High school diploma, General Education Development (GED), or BC Dogwood Diploma.
- Minimum age of 19 for applicants without a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
- English proficiency, either through prior education at grade 10 level or higher or by passing an English language assessment (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent). Adequate English language skills are essential for success, as the program is taught in English.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
- Outline the various historical and contemporary theoretical frameworks related to child growth and development.
- Show an understanding of child growth and development as a continuous aspect of life-span development.
- Clarify the growth and development processes in key developmental areas, such as
social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language. - Explain the genetic and environmental influences on individual growth and development.
- Identify signs of developmental delays or concerns and the associated risks.
