Course Overview

This course emphasizes the development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English. Students will enhance their reading comprehension and writing abilities through active participation and practice. They will also focus on expanding their vocabulary, improving grammatical accuracy, and increasing fluency in both listening and speaking.

English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements

Applicants must provide one of the following:

  • Proof of completing 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) in English in a country where English is a primary language.
  • Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is a
    principal language.

IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5

  • TOEFL IBT: Overall score of 46.
  • CLB PT: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.
  • CELPIP: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.

CAEL Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: Overall score of 40

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have a B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent qualification
  • Or be at least 19 years old and have been out of secondary school for at least one year by the
    first day of classes.

Learning Objectives

  • Conduct job interviews by observing interviews, creating questions, and interviewing a
    peer.
  • Make phone calls to gather health information by listening to a conversation and
    practicing phone communication.
  • Understand and provide instructions related to workplace safety.
  • Seek advice in a workplace setting.
  • Engage in storytelling by listening to a newcomer’s experience and sharing a personal
    story.
  • Connect with others by listening to a news report about a cultural event and making
    inquiries to organizations.
  • Present effectively in groups by listening to a newscast about community services and
    creating a newscast focused on a business or commercial service.
