Course Overview

This program focuses on enhancing reading, speaking, listening, and writing communication skills in English. Classroom activities involve students in developing reading and writing strategies within community, workplace, and academic settings. Learners will integrate language skills with essential Skills for Success, including teamwork, computer and document usage, critical thinking, and continuous
learning, along with intercultural competencies.

English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements

Applicants must provide one of the following:

  • Proof of completing 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) in English in a country where English is a primary language.
  • Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is a
    principal language.

IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5

  • TOEFL IBT: Overall score of 46.
  • CLB PT: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.
  • CELPIP: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.

CAEL Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: Overall score of 40

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have a B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent qualification
  • Or be at least 19 years old and have been out of secondary school for at least one year by the
    first day of classes.

Learning Objectives

upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Interacting Effectively: Read and write a narrative, take notes during an informal presentation, and interpret information from a graph.
  • Journaling: Read articles about workplace stress, take notes, write summaries, and create journal entries.
  • Applying for Positions: Prepare a skills inventory, compare resume writing websites, complete job application forms, and write cover letters.
  • Listening to Lectures: Retell the steps of a study method, listen to lectures on scientific or technological topics, and present a group concept map.
  • Conducting Questionnaires: Listen to discussions and lectures on environmental topics and provide suggestions for related issues.
  • Conducting Focus Groups: Follow instructions for conducting focus groups, analyze focus group discussions, and moderate a focus group.
  • Demonstrating Processes: Watch instructional videos on production processes, present a production process, and arrange site visits via telephone.
  • Analyzing Media: Analyze and deconstruct video advertisements and listen to public service announcements.
  • Participating in Meetings: Learn steps for running effective meetings, solve formal meeting problems, and role-play in formal meeting scenarios.
