Activity Assistant Certificate program
Program Overview
The Activity Assistant Certificate program at York Community College focuses on training individuals to plan and implement recreational activities that enhance the well-being of residents in care facilities. Students learn to assess the needs and preferences of diverse populations, developing programs that promote physical, emotional, and social engagement. Through supervised practicums, students gain practical experience, preparing them to create positive environments that improve the quality of life for individuals under their care.
Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements
B.C. secondary school graduation, or equivalent, or 19 years of age and out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes.
● High school diploma, General Education Development (GED), or BC Dogwood Diploma.
● Minimum age of 19 for applicants without a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
● Applicants must provide evidence of a negative tuberculin test, taken no more than six months before the date of application (or evidence of an appropriate follow-up if the test was positive).
● A criminal record check clearance from the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General’s Criminal Records Review Office.

English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements
Proof of completing 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) in
English in a country where English is a primary language.
Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where
English is a principal language.
IEL TS Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5
TOEFL IBT: Overall score of 46 Duolingo 90 or above
CLB PT: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5
CELPIP: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5
CAEL Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: Overall score of 40
OR – licensed healthcare professional in current and good standing (LPN, RN,
RPN, HCA, Home support worker, live-in caregiver, Medical Office Assistants,
Pharmacy Assistants, Pharmacists, Physicians, etc.)
